Signal 2271

Below this signal bridge Santa Fe's great passenger fleet once passed. At speeds of 100 mph the Super Chief, El Capitan, Chief, Grand Canyon Limited, California Limited, and Mail 7 and 8, occupied both a space and time. Before they fled to the airlines, actors, statesman, and potentates rolled under this very bridge. Legends like FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Jean Harlow, James Cagney, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Carol Lombard, Albert Einstein, and many more. The great fleet passed eastern Arizona mostly at night. The first surge was westward in the early evening. The Super Chief would flash by at 8:39PM -- dinnertime in the diner. By early AM the eastward surge appeared, with the El Capitan, number 22, at 3:29AM. Keeping them safely spaced from other trains or from other dangers was signal 2271. Continuously lit since 1928, it's a good bet that numbers 17, 19, 21, and 23 saw nothing but the same color you see here.
