Though the Raton Line is mostly on a north to south alignment, once the railroad turns from the Rio Grande water shed to follow Galisteo creek to Glorieta Pass, it is on an east to west alignment. Signal 8461, near the old siding of Ortiz (MP 846.5), is deep along the Galisteo creek area and like signal 8472, can be access only by hiking. To access it, follow the instructions listed for signal 8472, and then continue walking eastward for about a quarter of a mile. Both 8472 and 8461 guard the curve you see here.
