Semaphore Signal 8502

Between Lamy and Albuquerque there are two groups of semaphores -- the Los Cerrillos group and the Bernalillo group. The Bernalillo group is surrounded by Indian land, where farms and primitive villages dot the landscape. The Los Cerrillos group, on the other hand, is surrounded by exclusive homes and ranches, many approaching a million dollars. Since there is no real industry in the area to speak of, it's hard to imagine what sort of work these people do in order to afford such a lifestyle, but given the close proximity to the Santa Fe area, one can imagine that a good deal of them are artisans, lawyers, and the likes. Semaphore 8502, and most of its companions, can be accessed by taking state route 14 -- known as the turquoise highway due to all the craft stores, especially in the old mining town of Madrid -- to CR55A, approximately 3 miles east (north) of Los Cerrillos.

Notice that semaphore 8502 sits on a non-standard base, a good indication that this signal was relocated from another location. This semaphore is paired with 8491.
